I almost saw it nearly two years ago in October when Bruce Campbell
came to Houston for a book signing, at which he held a screening of
the film afterwards. Tickets sold out in an hour, and not only did I
miss getting tickets by a 1/2 hour, I already had Elvis Costello
tickets for the same night. Well, I did get to meet Bruce, get my
book signed and a photo taken. This week I finally saw the film he
was screening. "Bubba Ho-Tep."
By far one of the WEIRDEST movies I've ever seen (after John Water's
"Pink Flamingos") "Bubba Ho-Tep" is hilarious! I absolutely
recommend it as long as you have a great sense of dark, twisted
humor. The idea is hard to accept at first. Elvis Aaron Presley (aka
The King of Rock n' Roll) is living in a rest home in present day
Texas. "But Elvis is gone." you say. "Nope, just forgotten." He'd
say. Elvis decided he was tired of the fame, so he traded I.D.'s with
an Elvis impersonator named Sebastian Haff. Well, as we all know,
Elvis died in the 1970's, but it was actually Sebastian Haff, while
the REAL king lives on in obscurity. Everyone thinks he's crazy. He
befriends another resident of the rest home John F. Kennedy
(played perfectly by Ossie Davis.) "Isn't Ossie Davis a black man?"
you ask. "Yep." He is teriffic as JFK (or someone who thinks he
is.) Together these two discover a 1,000 year old
Egyptian mummy is stealing the souls of the defenseless seniors in
the home. The king & JFK are unlikely heroes who come to the aid of
their geriatric friends. Hard to believe this is a film? It is, and
an enjoyable one at that!
Have some fun and check out "Bubba Ho-Tep!" It's a bona-fide
B-movie bonanza!

"Shrek 2." Wow, what else can I say? While not as great as
the first film, It is nearly as good. The animation is better,
and I felt it was just as funny! The only weakness was the story,
but that's nit-picking. I loved this movie! All the best characters
have returned, aside from the main characters (Shrek = Mike Myers
Fiona = Cameron Dias & Donkey = Eddie Murphy) we see Gingerbread
Man, The Wolf und das 3 Pigs, yah! and Dragon with a few surprises
(if you stay through the credits!) John Cleese is perfect as Fiona's
father the King, and Julie Andrews is her Queen Mum. The best new
entry, hands-down is: Puss N' Boots!
Antonio Banderas is inspired as the voice of the ogre-slaying cat.
Jennifer Saunders (of Ab-Fab fame) is wonderful as the Fairy
Godmother (and does a nice cover of "I Need A Hero" by
Bonnie Tyler) The music is great, and when a Piano-playing Pirate
with a "Hook" for one hand croons with the voice of Tom Waits, I
lost it! A near perfect theater experience for both kids and adults.
Get thee to a theater "Far Far Away!"

Planning on seeing "Shrek 2" today, I am highly anticipating this
sequel and have been excited about it for months. Just thought this
was a funny title for something: "Machiavelli & Cheese"
