Two enjoyable Ben Stiller movies in a row?! Who’da thunk it?
I was expecting a lame tale at best, but I was pleasantly surprised
by this “underdog story.” Once again, Ben Stiller’s best move is to
surround himself with talented people and hope they can breathe life
and humor into the thin excuse for a plot line he frequently uses.
Peter (Vince Vaughn) is the slovenly owner of “Average Joe’s Gym.”
He isn’t into keeping the books in order or collecting regular fees
from the handful of patrons working out in his gym. The regulars
are all misfits of some sort, Justin (Justin Long,) Gordon
(Stephen Root,) Owen (Joel Moore,) Dwight (Chris Williams,) & Steve
the Pirate (Alan Tudyk as yes, a PIRATE.)
When White Goodman (Ben Stiller) the owner of Globo Gym threatens to
buy out the Joe’s by sending a lawyer Kate Veatch (Christine
Taylor) to prep them for liquidation, they scramble to find a way to
save their beloved hovel of a gym. True to the title, Dodgeball
becomes the name of their game to keep Joe’s open and untainted.
After learning all they could from one 1938 dodge ball training
video, the video’s celebrity dodge ball champ Patches O’Houlihan
(Rip Torn) enters to coach them. Will the Joe’s conquer, or will
the corporate bozos win it all? You’ll have to see it yourself.
Gary Cole & Jason Bateman are perfect as the announcers at the
Las Vegas tournament, and once they reach the Vegas setting, the
humor and the film really take off! If you’re looking for a laugh
this summer, “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” is a good start!
